We had over 1,200 loggies in attendance at last year's conference...this included active duty, reserve, and guardsmen, LOA corporate members, military contractors, and civil service personnel in the grades of GS-9 and higher. Of particular note, I am impressed with the increase in of civil service logisticians involved with LOA. Remember, the purpose of LOA is to enhance the mission of the United States Air Force...while providing an open forum for leadership, management and technical interchange. I can not think of a better forum to exchange ideas and network with other logisticians than at the LOA National Conference. To that end, I am leading a discussion panel, along with other SES’s...Mr Scott Reynolds, Ms Deb Walker, and Mr Rob Thomas...who will provide career advice to AF civilians in our current environment. We look forward to seeing as many AF civilians as possible at this year's LOA National Conference in San Antonio...see you there!"

A Message from the LOA President: “We really appreciate Mr Koenig for taking the time and leading this important mentorship panel for our civilian membership. As you know, we are not just a military-only association. We can not carry out our day-to-day logistics responsibilities without the dedicated support of our civilian workforce. Additionally, we need our civilian logisticians as members of LOA and we welcome attendance at the conference. In fact, I encourage all of our civilian LOA members to attend our LOA National Conference this year in San Antonio…I look forward to meeting each and every one of you. As a reminder, all of us need to visit the LOA website and register to attend this year’s conference. Finally, while you are on the LOA website...please take time to vote for your next LOA National Executive Board, the voting period will be over soon!”

Scholarship Nominations Due: 1 Aug 06 is just around the corner and that's the deadline to submit your LOA National Scholarship nomination packages. For the most current guidance and scholarship nomination procedures, please go to http://www.loanational.org/guidance.asp. Here are a couple of tips for you to keep in mind as you prepare your packages:
1.) The nomination package should cover events occurring over a 1-year period between 1 Jul 05 to 30 Jun 06.

2.) The basic application will be limited to a single page in bullet format. The Career Aspirations section (essay) will be in narrative form and may continue to a second page.

3.) Winners will be announced on or about 1 Sep 06.

4.) Nominations will be accepted from the chapter President or Vice President only, with one nomination per chapter.

5.) Email your scholarship nomination packages to the LOA National Scholarship Committee Chairman at scholarship@loanational.org.

Loggie Announcements: The 309th Software Maintenance Group at Hill AFB, Utah develops weapons systems software and related hardware solutions and technology to support and sustain national defense. Recently, 309 SMXG achieved the highest level of certification, a Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) Level 5 certification by the Software Engineering Institute. Level 5 is the highest level in CMMI and the rating is effective for 3 years.

Chapter Highlights: The monthly LOA National Newsletter is a great way of letting the LOA membership know what is going on in your chapter! To let the general membership know what is going on in your chapter via the monthly newsletter, send an email (with a photo if available) to chaptersupport@loanational.org. National Conference: This year’s LOA National Conference is just around the corner and as a reminder, the cut off for Early Bird registration is 15 Aug 06. If you register by 15 Aug 06, the registration fee is only $200, saving you $25 over the regular price. Also, in addition to the outstanding professional tours that are available, the spouses have a great tour line-up as well--including a tour of the City of San Antonio (complete with shopping and sight seeing), a hand-made jewelry class, and a full day excursion to Fredericksburg, one of the most beautiful cities in the Texas hill country. Go to the conference web site at http://www.loanational.org/conference and register today!

ER: By now you should have received your Summer ER. The theme is “High-Tech Logistics”. It was our 100th ER and it is a whopper!

Fall ER is the “Developing Loggies” and is well underway—we want to get it to the printer early so it’ll be in your hands well before the conference. Look for another great line up of stories!

We are looking for suggestion for ER themes for our future issues. Have something you think would make for a good ER? Send it, or any other story submissions our way! Editor@loanational.org

LOA History: MOA & LOA National Presidents Series: Lt Col Ray Reed, 1987 – 1989. Lt Col Ray Reed became the Maintenance Officer Association’s fifth president in 1987. As its leader, he made his intentions clear right from the start: “To see the organization grow and prosper.” A re-write of bylaws was his first order of business. Sounds simple enough, but was in fact difficult to accomplish since new bylaws had to be voted on by ALL members! Two very special events highlighted Lt Col Reed’s tenure as MOA President. The first was presenting MOA’s first lifetime membership to Lt Gen Leo Marquez upon his retirement from active duty in 1987. The second was a U.S. Air Force Aircraft Maintenance Delegation hosted by the People’s Republic of China, during which Chinese maintainers were made honorary MOA members. Noteworthy too was Lt Col Reed’s kick-off of MOA’s 1987 Convention in San Antonio, Texas. The conference was the organization’s largest up to that point with 87 members attending! Did Lt Col Ray Reed or other MOA pioneers ever envision a time when conferences would draw 1,500 members, sponsors, and vendors? Their legacy certainly lives on.

Franchises: The open season for LOA National franchises is now closed. LOA National received several new franchise applications--including a new updated 'LOA Coin' for sale by the Langley Chapter, a new 'LOA Sports Water Bottle' submitted by the Kirtland Chapter, and we renewed the Robin AFB's 'LOA Coaster' as well as Minot AFB's 'LOA Tankard'. Check out the website next week to see all the new items.  If your chapter missed the opportunity to apply, please send an email requesting a franchise application and an approximate extension date to infoofficer@loanational.org.  The LOA National website will continue to market last season’s merchandise on the website till 31 Jul 06.

The Bottom Line: As always, remember our organization is all about the troops. Our focus will continue to be on training our replacements, and sharing ideas.
