2006 LOA National Awards Program Suspenses:  It's time to recognize the outstanding work being done by Chapters and Individual members for LOA.  Key dates for the 2006 National Awards Program are rapidly approaching.  As a reminder, on         1 Jul 06, chapter sizes based upon number of National members will be calculated and sent to all Chapter Leaders.  These will be used to determine which category (Small or Large) your chapter will compete in.  All Chapter and Individual awards packages are due to the LOA Vice President no later than 30 Jul 06 (email to vicepres@loanational.org).  Package requirements, award categories, and all other award-related information can be found on LOA G-5 (Awards Program), at http://www.loanational.org/guidance.asp.

Loggie Announcements:
1.  On 12 Jun 06, HQ USAF / A4R put out their call for ALROC class 06C nominees.  The selection board will convene in Aug 06 to review packages.  ALROC class 06C will begin on 6 Sep 06 and are expected to graduate on 1 Dec 06.  Graduates are expected to fill a critical agile combat command and control billet upon their first PCS after graduation.  ALROC class 06B began on 9 May 06; the students are almost halfway through the course and are scheduled to graduate on 4 Aug 06.

2.  USAF AMMOS hosted the “first ever” Aircraft/Munitions Maintenance Tactics Conference (AMMTAC) in Apr 06.  The AMMTAC was created, in part, to summarize curriculum changes (the USAF AMMOS curriculum was upgraded during           Jan-Apr 06 and therefore did not conduct class) and showcase selected lessons, as well as, providing a forum for the maintenance/munitions community to discuss current issues and challenges.  The ultimate goal of the AMMTAC is to identify potential updates to the existing AFTTP 3-21 series manuals which could be integrated during the TTP conference.  This year’s TTP conference will cover AFTTP 3-21.1 (aircraft maintenance) is scheduled for 6 – 15 Sep 06 at Nellis AFB.  Anyone interested in attending the TTP conference should contact USAF AMMOS at DSN 682-5994.

Mentorship:  Your Mentorship Committee has been working hard on several exciting initiatives to improve our program. First,     Lt Col Larry Stephenson has developed a new module on the LOA website (with technical assistance by Maj JD Duvall) which will allow LOA members to post their resumes for review by our corporate members.  Second, Maj Kevin Sampels is leading a team which will completely overhaul our mentorship program database---to include much more data such as jobs held, special assignments, and experience.  This will allow mentees to go in and request a mentor with more specific experience if desired, or vice versa.  Or, if someone had a question such as "I'd like to learn about the LCBP or AFIT programs", we could pull up a list of LOA members who have been through those programs.  Third, Capt Chris Boring is leading a team to build a new and more comprehensive LOA Mentorship Webpage, with links to other mentor programs and a LOA mentor/mentee guide.  Fourth,        Maj Matt Paskin leads the team which will tackle continuous education about mentorship, including a "mentorship corner" in our newsletter, senior leadership quotes on mentorship, and professional development updates.  Finally, Col (ret) Mike Hogan has put together a draft logistics officer exchange program, where military/civilian loggies can spend some time in a commercial logistics operation and vice versa.  If you are interested in helping out with any of these initiatives, or have other new ideas, please contact Lt Col Richard Schwing, Mentorship Committee Lead and LOA VP, at vicepres@loanational.org.

On behalf of the Alamo Chapter, “We hope you’ve already made your plans to attend this year’s national conference in San Antonio, Texas, which promises to be one of the best ever.  In addition to the opportunity to hear some of the Air Forces’ finest logisticians, you’ll also have the opportunity to attend some outstanding professional tours which include Basic Military Training, Kelly Aviation Center, Boeing, Standard Aero, Southwest Research Institute, the 651st Munitions Squadron, and the Basic Combat Convoy Course…the course that provides combat preparation for military personnel heading to Southwest Asia to lead or participate in vehicle convoy operations.  Don’t miss out…sign up now at http://www.loanational.org/conference.”

ER:  The Summer ER is at the printer and should be in the post late June.  It’s the 100th ER and we celebrated with an extra-large issue!  This issue’s theme:  “High-Tech Logistics”.

The Fall ER theme is “Sustaining Today's Weapon Systems with Tomorrow's Airmen” (same as the conference theme).  Submissions are piling up, so if you have a submission—send it before 10 Jul 06 to Editor@loanational.org.

We are trying to decide on themes for the next few ERs.  If you have an idea for a great ER theme, please send it to Editor@loanational.org or pr@loanational.org.  Remember—it needs to be diverse enough that we can solicit varying articles.

LOA History:  MOA & LOA National Presidents Series:  Col Reggie Jones, 1986 – 1987:  Col Reggie Jones was the Maintenance Officer Association’s fourth national president.  Although, he only served as an interim president from summer 1986 to summer 1987 due to the sitting president receiving a short-notice assignment, he was certainly instrumental in MOA’s history.  Membership crested the 1,000 member mark under his leadership and he significantly improved the organization’s financial posture.  An interesting quote from Col Jones provides us with some insight of his vision for MOA’s future; “We [MOA] have grown from an organization concerned principally with the trivial, self-preserving arguments on rated versus non-rated issues to one with much broader professional concerns.”  He called it, “MOA’s professional maturation.”
